People's Summit concludes with criticism of the capitalist model and demands for climate justice.

The People's Summit concluded this Sunday (November 16th) at the Federal University of Pará, in Belém, with a clear message: the solutions proposed by governments for the climate crisis are insufficient. The meeting, held alongside the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), brought together approximately 20,000 participants and produced a final letter criticizing the capitalist model of production and corporate lobbying.

Massive mobilization in the streets of Belém.

Popular participation was significant. A march organized by social movements attracted approximately 70,000 people, according to the organizers. The gathering also began with a boat parade on the Guajará Bay, with 5,000 participants in 250 boats, symbolizing the connection between the climate struggle and the defense of Amazonian territories.

Darcy Frigo, a member of the Political Commission of the Climate Summit, explained the importance of the mobilization: “People saw in this popular mobilization the possibility of shouting louder, of shouting collectively in the face of the process that is taking place in the official space of COP30, from where we cannot expect solutions that are taking too long.”.

Demands brought to the official negotiators

The final declaration of the People's Summit will be presented in the negotiation spaces of COP30, which began its high-level session this Monday (November 17). Ambassador Correa do Lago, president of the conference, pledged to bring the demands of social movements to the official discussions, reinforcing: "I hope that COP30 will be the COP of the turning point.".

Critique of false solutions

The social movements gathered in Belém reject what they call "false solutions" to the climate, such as carbon market mechanisms that do not guarantee a real transition in modes of production. The final letter calls on world authorities for a transformation that guarantees climate justice, the sovereignty of peoples, and popular participation in decisions about the future of the planet.

Context of COP30

The conference takes place at a critical moment for global climate negotiations. COP30 in Belém is considered strategic for defining new commitments to emissions reductions and climate finance for the coming years. The massive presence of social movements and indigenous peoples reinforces the pressure for decisions that prioritize the protection of the Amazon and social justice.
