The rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) represents a new challenge for the future of the planet, especially with regard to energy consumption and sustainability. While AI opens up a world of opportunities, its environmental impact cannot be ignored.
High consumption of energy and water
Data centers that support AI operations consume extraordinary amounts of electricity to keep their chips running at peak performance. This process generates intense heat, which needs to be dissipated by cooling systems that use air conditioning and chilled water. This system is essential to ensure the uninterrupted operation of data centers, but it considerably increases the demand for energy and water resources.
Christopher Wellise, vice president of sustainability at Equinix, points out that "the chips in these computers get very hot when electricity passes through them. And we need to remove that heat." The use of cold water for cooling data centers is significant: after absorbing heat from the equipment, the water heats up and is discarded, which imposes a direct environmental impact.
Contracts with renewable energy sources, but challenges persist.
To mitigate this impact, data centers and technology companies are entering into long-term contracts with renewable energy suppliers, promoting an increase in clean energy generation. However, the United States government, under the Trump administration, slowed the installation of new solar and wind farms, hindering the expansion of these sources.
Fernando Valle, an expert in the sector, points out that "energy sources are mixed in the electrical grid," which means that, in practice, final consumption is not entirely guaranteed to be renewable, even with specific contracts.
Impacts and perspectives
The expansion of AI and digital technology requires a coordinated effort between governments, businesses, and society to balance technological innovation and sustainability. Without significant advances in clean energy generation and the rational use of resources, the environmental impact could compromise the benefits brought by artificial intelligence.
