US aircraft carrier in the Caribbean raises regional tensions.

The world's largest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald Ford, arrived in the Caribbean Sea this Sunday (16), intensifying US pressure on Venezuela. The military movement, which includes destroyers and combat aircraft, was announced by the US Navy as part of Operation "Spear of the South", aimed at combating drug trafficking in the region.

Operation details

The USS Gerald Ford strike group crossed the Negated Passage, near the British Virgin Islands, accompanied by the destroyers USS Winston Churchill, USS Mahan, and USS Bainbridge. During the operation, attack jets and a B-52 Stratofortress bomber flew over the fleet, reinforcing the American military presence.

According to Admiral Alvin Holsey, commander of the U.S. Southern Command, the mission seeks to dismantle transnational criminal networks. "We are ready to confront threats that seek to destabilize our region," he stated.

Political and military impact

The arrival of the aircraft carrier has increased tensions between the US government and the regime of Nicolás Maduro, accused by Washington of leading the so-called "Cartel of the Suns." Experts point out that, although the official mission is against drug trafficking, the deployment of the USS Gerald Ford is seen as a warning sign for Caracas.

Since September, US attacks have left at least 80 dead in 20 raids against vessels suspected of transporting drugs in the Caribbean and the Eastern Pacific.

International context

The operation takes place amidst a backdrop of political and economic instability in Venezuela, with international criticism of the Maduro government for human rights violations and accusations of corruption. The US military presence in the Caribbean reinforces the debate about national sovereignty and foreign intervention in Latin America.
