Brazil and China establish partnership for the production of radiopharmaceuticals.

Last Thursday (13), Brazil and China aligned a new era of cooperation in the area of nuclear technology, focused on the national production of radiopharmaceuticals, essential for diagnoses and treatments of cancer and other diseases. The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), Luciana Santos, met with the President of the Council of the China Isotope and Radiation Corporation (Circ), Xiao Yafei, in Brasília, to strengthen this collaboration.

The agreement foresees the expansion of production by the Institute for Energy and Nuclear Research (Ipen), technology transfer, and intellectual property protection, with expected progress throughout 2026, including the creation of a subsidiary in Brazil and a specialized team to enable the operation.

Technological innovation and sustainable financing at COP30

During COP30, held in Belém (PA), Finep highlighted the role of technological innovation and green financing for sustainable development. The agency's president, Luiz Antonio Elias, emphasized the importance of Amazonian science integrated with local knowledge as a strategic advantage for Brazil and the planet.

The areas of focus include decarbonizing transportation, sustainable fuels, energy generation and storage, bioeconomy, and the circular economy. Since 2023, more than 400 startups have been supported by programs such as Tecnova, Centelha, and Inovacred.

At COP30, Finep announced three public calls for proposals, including R$ 150 million for research infrastructure in the Legal Amazon and funds for bioeconomy startups, reinforcing the commitment to clean technologies and an inclusive economy.

Environmental challenges of technological advancement

The advancement of artificial intelligence and cutting-edge technology brings significant environmental challenges, such as the high energy and water consumption required for cooling data centers. Complex air conditioning and water cooling systems are necessary to keep these centers operating, generating a relevant environmental impact, even with renewable energy contracts.

Technology transfer and climate justice under debate.

At COP30, technology transfer to developing countries was highlighted as one of the most difficult issues in climate negotiations, essential for accelerating adaptation plans and meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement. Brazilian members of parliament advocated for international cooperation with respect for sovereignty and the importance of sustainable agriculture as part of the solution to the climate crisis.
