Google activates layered defense to combat cell phone theft.
Google announced on Wednesday (November 12th) that Android's anti-theft tools will now be automatically activated on new phones sold in Brazil. The measure aims to increase user security and hinder criminal activity in the country, which ranks among the world leaders in mobile phone theft and robbery.
What changes for the user?
The change applies to all devices that are being set up for the first time or restored to factory settings. Features such as Theft Detection Lock and Remote Lock are now enabled by default.
According to Google, these tools are already being used by the São Paulo Military Police, who have activated the remote blocking system more than 5,000 times since the middle of the year. The company states that the goal is to create a multi-layered defense to protect Brazilians before, during, and after an attempted robbery.
New layers of protection
Screen sharing protection: A pilot program against screen-sharing scams was developed in partnership with Itaú and integrated into Google Wallet. The feature will be activated on phones with Android 11 or higher and will alert the user if they are sharing their screen during a call with someone outside their contact list. The device will display a warning and allow the call to be ended with a tap.
Factory Restoration Protection: It prevents the device from being used if the thief tries to skip the setup process. The device can only be unlocked with the original account credentials. Additionally, the remote lock now includes an optional security question to confirm the owner's identity.
Commitment to local partnerships
Fabrício Ferracioli, technical manager of Android partnerships at Google Brazil, said that the company will continue investing in partnerships with local authorities to expand access to the system's protections.
Global context
Google's initiative reflects a growing trend of technology being applied to solve practical security problems. That same week, Brazil also made progress on other technological fronts: the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Luciana Santos, met with Chinese representatives to strengthen cooperation in the production of radiopharmaceuticals, while Finep highlighted investments in climate innovation and bioeconomy at COP30.
