Pix turns 5 years old, accounting for 50% of payments in Brazil.

Pix, the Central Bank's instant payment system, will be five years old in 2025 and already accounts for more than half of all financial transactions carried out in Brazil, according to data from the National Treasury released this week.

Impact on the market and the economy

Since its launch in November 2020, Pix has revolutionized the way Brazilians pay and receive money. Today, approximately 501% of electronic payments in the country are made through the system, surpassing credit and debit cards in many sectors.

Companies of all sizes have adopted Pix as their main payment channel, boosting the digitalization of small businesses and facilitating access to financial services for previously excluded populations.

Challenges and opportunities

Despite the success, experts point to challenges for 2026, such as the need to increase security against fraud and ensure digital inclusion in remote areas. The National Treasury highlights that nine of the 27 federal state-owned companies face a fragile financial situation, which may limit investments in technology and infrastructure.

For the private sector, the growth of Pix opens up opportunities for new business models, such as fintechs specializing in retail solutions and personalized financial services.

Position of the parties

  • Central Bank: He advocates for the expansion of Pix as a tool for inclusion and modernization.
  • Companies: They approve of the efficiency, but ask for more protection against scams.
  • Consumers: They value practicality, but complain about safety risks.
