Brazil and China sign agreement to advance radiopharmaceuticals.

At a meeting held in Brasília this Thursday (13), Brazil and China aligned a new era of cooperation in the production of radiopharmaceuticals, essential inputs for diagnoses and treatments of cancer and other diseases. The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Luciana Santos, and the President of the Council of the China Isotope and Radiation Corporation (CIR), Xiao Yafei, discussed the expansion of national production by the Institute of Energy and Nuclear Research (IPEN) and the technological transfer between the two countries.

Impacts and objectives of the partnership

The agreement aims to guarantee greater technological autonomy for Brazil and direct benefits to public health, focusing on innovation and the protection of intellectual property. The partnership could advance in 2026 with the creation of a Circ subsidiary in Brazil and the formation of a specialized team to operationalize the cooperation.

Xiao Yafei highlighted China's commitment to deepening collaboration in the field of nuclear technology, while Minister Luciana Santos emphasized the technical, commercial, and legal advancements that underpin the joint project.

Broader context of technological innovation in Brazil

This movement occurs amidst a scenario of strong Brazilian leadership in global technological innovation, highlighted by the participation of more than 370 startups in the Web Summit Lisbon 2025 and increasing investments in bioeconomy and sustainability, as discussed at COP30 in Belém.

Furthermore, Brazil leads Latin America in salaries for technology professionals, especially engineers and data scientists, with an annual average of US$67,000, driven by demand in artificial intelligence and flexible work models.

What changes for society?

The Brazil-China partnership in radiopharmaceuticals promises to accelerate the availability of advanced treatments in the country, reduce dependence on imports, and foster national scientific research. The technological innovation associated with this cooperation can positively impact public health, the pharmaceutical industry, and sustainable economic development.
