The main index of the Brazilian stock exchange closed lower, marking the end of one of the longest winning streaks in the history of the national financial market.

The record sequence had raised the Ibovespa to historic levels, surpassing 158,000 points for the first time during Tuesday's session (11). At its best moment, the index reached 158,467.21 points, reflecting investor optimism about possible interest rate cuts in Brazil after October inflation slowed to 0.09%.

What has changed in the market?

The fall on Wednesday interrupts the upward cycle that had accumulated significant gains during the week. On the previous Friday (14), the Ibovespa had closed up 0.37%, at 157,739 points, accumulating a gain of 2.39% for the week.

This performance reflected the confidence of financial agents regarding the domestic scenario. October's inflation, reaching only 0.09%, fell short of market expectations, fueling hopes that the Central Bank could begin a cycle of reducing the Selic rate, currently at 15% per year.

Challenging macroeconomic context

Despite the positive performance of the stock market, the Brazilian economy faces significant contradictions. While the labor market is hitting record highs in employment, the accumulated inflation over 12 months remains at 5.13%, well above the 4.5% target ceiling set by the Central Bank.

The Ministry of Finance has revised its GDP growth projections for 2025 downwards, from 2.31% to a smaller expansion. For 2026, the expectation is for even lower growth, around 1.51% to 1.78%, depending on the source. This scenario reflects the cost of the monetary tightening necessary to combat inflation.

The financial market has reduced its inflation forecast to 4.55% by the end of 2025, still above the tolerated ceiling. The estimate for the Selic rate remains at 15% per year until the end of the year, with expectations of a drop to 12.25% by the end of 2026.

External pressures

In addition to internal challenges, Brazil faces external trade pressure. The National Confederation of Industry (CNI) has warned of the urgency in negotiations with Washington to remove the 40% surcharge levied on Brazilian exports.

The dollar, which had closed below R$ 5.30 during the upward cycle, has accumulated a drop of 1.64% in November and 14.34% in 2025, signaling greater relative confidence in the Brazilian currency, although volatility remains present.

What to expect

The Central Bank reiterated in its minutes that it will maintain the Selic rate at its current level for an extended period to ensure compliance with the inflation target. The next Copom meeting will take place on December 4th and 5th, when the decision regarding the continuation or commencement of rate cuts will be announced.

The week of November 17-21 will bring key releases, including the minutes from the US Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting and economic data that could influence capital flows to Brazil and the continued performance of the stock market.

Photo by Vadim Shevyrin on Unsplash

Brazilian stock market falls and ends longest record-breaking streak since 1994.
