Between November 10th and 13th, the Portuguese capital will host the tenth edition of the Web Summit, and the country arrives with its largest delegation ever: between 340 and 380 startups and innovative companies, depending on the final count. This number represents much more than a national record—it's a concrete sign that the Brazilian technology ecosystem is not only growing but consolidating itself as a benchmark in Latin America.

The delegation, coordinated by the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil), in partnership with the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (Sebrae), is arriving at an event that brings together more than 70,000 participants, around 2,500 startups from various countries, and more than a thousand investors. Giants such as Nvidia, IBM, Microsoft, Meta, Qualcomm, Apple, and TikTok are present, creating an environment conducive to business and strategic connections.

The numbers that explain the growth

Data from the Sebrae Startups Observatory reveals the scale of the ongoing transformation. In August 2025, Brazil surpassed the mark of 20,000 active innovative companies—a growth of 301,000 startups in just one year, compared to August 2024. This scenario places the country in 27th position globally in terms of the number of startups, according to the Startup Ecosystem Index 2025 published by StartupBlink. For context: the United States leads with approximately 1.1 million startups, followed by India with 493,500.

The scale is impressive when you consider that, globally, an average of 137,000 startups are born every day. Brazil, with its 20,000 innovative companies, represents a dispersed and dynamic ecosystem, with innovation no longer concentrated in large centers but spreading across different regions of the country.

Concrete return of previous editions

The Web Summit is not just a networking space. In the last three years, Brazilian startups that participated in the event closed deals worth approximately 15 million euros. This history of concrete results explains why the Brazilian presence has grown exponentially — it's not just hope, it's proof of real opportunities.

Jorge Viana, president of ApexBrasil, reinforces this view: “Brazil is home to more than 20,000 startups, and that number continues to grow. The country is now a benchmark for innovation in Latin America, with scalable technological solutions in various sectors that are attracting the interest of investors and companies worldwide.”

Artificial Intelligence as a guiding thread

Artificial intelligence is the big highlight of Web Summit 2025. According to data presented during the Brazil-Portugal Internationalization Seminar, held on Monday (10), the potential for investments in AI startups is at 380 billion dollars in this cycle, and could reach 500 billion in 2026. This puts pressure on the ecosystem for quality, governance and impact — requirements that Brazilian startups need to incorporate to compete globally.

Gil Azevedo, CEO of Unicorn Factory Lisbon, sums up the reality well: all startups nowadays end up incorporating artificial intelligence in one way or another. It's no longer a differentiator; it's become a requirement.

Key sectors: from bioeconomy to tourism

The Brazilian Pavilion presents a diverse program, with panels, presentations, and pitches covering multiple sectors. Highlights include solutions related to the bioeconomy, health, education, sustainable agribusiness, tourism, and the creative economy. Embratur, for example, brought eight startups focused on tourism, offering solutions with an emphasis on sustainability, data, and new experiences.

This diversity reflects a clear strategy: Brazil is not putting all its eggs in one basket. Its strength is distributed across multiple fronts, which reduces risks and expands opportunities for connections with investors from different areas.

Diversity and inclusion are gaining ground.

The Web Summit also reinforces its commitment to diversity. In 2024, 44% of the startups present were founded by women—the highest number ever—and women represented 42% of the participants and 37% of the speakers. These numbers are not just symbolic; they indicate that the innovation ecosystem is becoming more inclusive and leveraging talent more broadly.

What's at stake?

For Brazilian startups, the Web Summit is more than just a networking event. It's a transformative opportunity to access global capital, establish strategic partnerships with multinational companies, and validate solutions in the international market. Maria Paula Velloso, Industry and Services Manager at ApexBrasil, is clear about this: “Participating in an event like the Web Summit Lisbon is a transformative opportunity for all Brazilian startups—whether they are at the beginning of their journey or already on more established paths.”

The largest Brazilian delegation in the event's history is no coincidence. It's the result of public policies supporting innovation, the growing maturity of the ecosystem, and the global perception that Brazil is a breeding ground for talent and scalable solutions. In the coming days, in Lisbon, this bet will be put to the test. The numbers, however, already speak for themselves.

Photo by Dan Taylor on Unsplash

Brazil's largest delegation in the event's history reinforces the country's position in global innovation.
